FS25 ShKH vz. 77 Dana V1.0

The ShKH vz. 77 (acronym for Samohybná Kanónová Húfnica vzor 77, “model 77 self-propelled howitzer gun”) or DANA (acronym for Dělo automobilní nabíjené automaticky, “automatically loaded self-propelled gun” in Czech) is a wheeled self-propelled howitzer of 152 mm caliber. It was designed in Czechoslovakia in the 1970s by Konštrukta Trenčín and built by ZTS in Dubnica nad Váhom, in present-day Slovakia. Commissioned in 1981, it was the first operational 152 mm wheeled self-propelled artillery gun. In the Czech Republic they continued to develop this vehicle with new fully automated versions that can be operated even by only 2 crew members, such as the DANA M2, while in Slovakia they chose to move to the 155 mm caliber with the ShKH vz. 2000 Zuzana. The DITA is a version of the DANA M2 with a standard 155mm NATO barrel.

The ShKH vz. 77 Dana is indeed an impressive piece of military hardware, known for its mobility, firepower, and accuracy. Its design as a wheeled self-propelled howitzer of 152mm caliber was innovative for its time, providing a balance between firepower and mobility on the battlefield. The transition to newer versions like the DANA M2 with enhanced automation and reduced crew requirements showcases the ongoing efforts to improve the capabilities of this platform.

The shift in Slovakia to the ShKH vz. 2000 Zuzana with a larger 155mm caliber reflects the evolving requirements for modern artillery systems, aiming to enhance range, accuracy, and overall lethality. The DITA variant, featuring a standard 155mm NATO barrel, further aligns the DANA platform with broader international standards, enhancing interoperability with NATO forces.

The continued development and adaptation of the DANA platform in both the Czech Republic and Slovakia demonstrate the flexibility and versatility of this self-propelled howitzer, ensuring its relevance and effectiveness on the modern battlefield.
