A Maypole is a decorated tree or tree trunk that is erected in Bavaria, the Rhineland, Saarland, Emsland, East Frisia, North Rhine-Westphalia, Franconia, Baden, Swabia, the Palatinate, Hesse, parts of Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, Thuringia, and Lusatia, as well as in Austria, parts of Switzerland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Slovenia, Hungary, and parts of Romania on May 1st. In other regions, it is also erected at Pentecost.
